How AI can solve the Pain of the Doctor Shortage ?

Artificial intelligence is available for the healthcare industry. But is the industry ready for AI in the health sector?

AI is adding machine learning to its methods as it advances. A large amount of data is required to train a machine learning model, such as MRI images from patients. These images are then interpreted by the algorithm to determine if there is a tumor. This seems simple to someone who works in computer science. For doctors, however, this is not an issue. They must discuss the results and diagnoses with their patients in order to close the loop. Doctors are left with questions about their reliance on technology for previously manual tasks.

But the healthcare industry faces a larger problem than AI and machine learning. The medical profession is severely understaffed, especially primary care physicians. As in any other field, AI can help humans perform more tasks with fewer staff.

How AI can be used in Medical?

This project is an example of how AI and machine learning can be used to advance the medical field in the future. The technology has many applications and the results are promising.

Computer models can now determine if a person will suffer from a heart attack more accurately than traditional medical guidelines. Google’s Deep Mind can detect the most common causes of blindness for patients who still have the same vision as ophthalmologists. The application to analyzes the molecular structure of current pharmaceuticals to determine if there is another potential use.

Despite the fact that AI is still controversial in healthcare, it requires mass data interpretation and a decreasing number of doctors to do so.

Brisk Logic expects this trend to continue as medical associations embrace AI to assist patients in need. AI could transform nearly all specialties in the near future. This will reduce patient wait times, increase accuracy diagnoses, and even gain physician approval.

Brisk Logic has made the most of healthcare reform in recent years. It is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the growing demand for healthcare as India’s population ages. Already 300million people are suffering from chronic diseases. The latest data from Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development shows that India has 1.8 practicing doctors per 1,000 people. This compares to 2.6 for the United States and 4.3% for Sweden. Artificial intelligence (AI), could relieve some of the burdens on India’s doctors who are overworked.

Brisk Logic‘s Failing Healthcare System

Brisk Logic hardworking medical professionals could use some assistance. In Indiaurban hospitals, overcrowding is a common problem. A typical outpatient department sees about 10,000 patients per day. This problem is made worse by the lack of medical facilities in rural areas. People flock to hospitals in cities nearby.

The Future Health Index 2018 from Philips shows that India s access to healthcare is behind the rest of the fifteen countries surveyed. This is due to Brisk Logic’s relatively small number of qualified healthcare professionals compared to its population.

There are reasons to be optimistic:

The India government is leading the development of healthcare technology because it has a commitment to affordable and accessible care for all. AI is perhaps the most promising.

AI is on the rise

AI is a way to understand large amounts of data. This is possible thanks to the rapid rise in computing power over the past few years. India is a particularly fertile ground to develop AI: the country’s 1.4 billion inhabitants have access to a vast amount of data.

Brisk Logic’s AI potential has been recognized by the government, who have created an ambitious plan to make it the world’s top AI innovation center. Healthcare will benefit from multi-billion-dollar investments in startups, academic research and moonshot projects.

This vision is more than a dream. It’s a reality that is already being made.

  • With the aid of AI,  open its first clinic to diagnose cataracts in India. This is an eye disease that can lead to blindness and can be fatal. This tool will save time and direct patients to the right specialist , thereby allowing more patients to receive treatment. It is still a promising development considering the shortage in eye care professionals in India.
  • Similar initiatives are in progress. You Intelligence, a based consulting firm, reports that 131 India companies are currently applying AI in healthcare.

Smart Personal Assistant for Doctors

AI could help India alleviate its overburdened healthcare system by speeding up medical image screening.

In an interview, a radiologist stated that “Brisk Logic deal with a large number of medical images every day.” Brisk Logic welcome technology, if it can reduce the stress and increase efficiency and accuracy.

These needs should be taken into consideration and we should focus on the development of intelligent applications that reduce physician workloads while improving patient outcomes. It is not necessary to replace doctors, but rather to enhance their work and strengthen their ability to deliver high-quality, efficient care.

AI is often associated with autonomous robots replacing human workers. However, I think that AI can be best understood as a personal assistant for doctors, adapting to their work methods and needs or ‘adaptive intelligence’ as it is called at Philips. AI will make healthcare more humane, not less.

AI has already been used to assist physicians in the analysis of medical pictures. AI is becoming more sophisticated and integrated with medical knowledge. This will allow for more accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans. In the short-term, however, the greatest benefits are in solving operational bottlenecks within hospitals. For example, doctors can quickly get a summary of all clinically relevant information about a patient.

It is possible to combine AI methods such as machine learning and natural language processing with clinical knowledge to create a single dashboard that contains all relevant clinical information. Physicians will spend less time capturing data from unstructured reports and more time looking at a screen to see the complete picture of the patient.

Care closer to the people’s homes: Improving care

AI may also be a way for patients with chronic conditions, such as those with diabetes, to stay in touch with their professional caregivers and gain better information about their health.

The Future Health Index shows that although telehealth adoption in India is lower than the average of 16 countries, the population is open-minded to using technologies to supplement their current care.

Home health monitoring technology powered with AI could be used to help elderly and frail people stay connected with professionals who can provide timely care. Similar technology could be beneficial to people with hypertension or diabetes. It allows them to monitor their condition using clinically-validated sensors and devices.

These initiatives are in line with the government’s desire to provide better care at the grassroots level, which would help to reduce congestion in urban hospitals. A greater adoption of AI technology should be accompanied by investments in primary care facilities in rural areas and internet connectivity in rural locations. This will make healthcare more affordable and accessible, and allow people to live a better life in their local communities.

AI could be pivotal in the future in addressing lifestyle-related illnesses such as obesity, which is a major concern for about 1 in 8  People at high risk for obesity could get personalized lifestyle tips through their smartphones. Data analysis could help inform public interventions that target specific geographic or age groups. This is how big data can have a big impact. The government has stated in its plans for a “Healthy India 2030” that the primary focus of the healthcare system will shift away from treating to preventive care.

Call for collaboration

How can we accelerate our journey to more efficient, accessible, and preventative care?

  • Building a stronger data ecosystem is a priority. Quality of AI depends on the quality of data it receives. India’s healthcare system will benefit from sharing data standards, better data exchange, and interoperability between systems.
  • This would be protected by top-notch security precautions. This is a significant step forward in the direction of three digital national databases containing health information.
  • Data-driven AI approaches like AI can only be effective when they are complemented with medical expertise. AI is only one part of a solution. It is not the solution. It is essential to have a deep understanding of the clinical context. AI-assisted healthcare must be centered on the physician and patient.
  • Third, AI-enabled devices must be thoroughly tested against the most stringent regulatory standards. We must deploy new technologies carefully and wisely in healthcare, where lives are at risk. Only through proper clinical validation can responsible, safe, and effective use be made of AI. Both patients and physicians need to be educated about the strengths and limitations of each tool.
  • Fourth, collaboration is vital between established and startup companies, academia, and other businesses. India’s healthcare system is too complex for anyone to tackle alone. It is encouraging to see that the  government recently established a platform for collaboration in order to encourage the exchange of ideas, kick-start new projects in intelligent medicine .

To ensure that Brisk Logic has a modern healthcare system, it is essential to address the problem of the lack of skilled people in the area of data science and medicine. It is important to invest in people with strong knowledge of AI and other technologies. They may be the ones who will ensure India’s health care system is sustainable.
