How AI can solve the Pain of the Doctor Shortage ?

Artificial intelligence is available for the healthcare industry. But is the industry ready for AI in the health sector?

AI is adding machine learning to its methods as it advances. A large amount of data is required to train a machine learning model, such as MRI images from patients. These images are then interpreted by the algorithm to determine if there is a tumor. This seems simple to someone who works in computer science. For doctors, however, this is not an issue. They must discuss the results and diagnoses with their patients in order to close the loop. Doctors are left with questions about their reliance on technology for previously manual tasks.

But the healthcare industry faces a larger problem than AI and machine learning. The medical profession is severely understaffed, especially primary care physicians. As in any other field, AI can help humans perform more tasks with fewer staff.

AI has already been used to assist physicians in the analysis of medical pictures. AI is becoming more sophisticated and integrated with medical knowledge. This will allow for more accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans. In the short-term, however, the greatest benefits are in solving operational bottlenecks within hospitals. For example, doctors can quickly get a summary of all clinically relevant information about a patient.

It is possible to combine AI methods such as machine learning and natural language processing with clinical knowledge to create a single dashboard that contains all relevant clinical information. Physicians will spend less time capturing data from unstructured reports and more time looking at a screen to see the complete picture of the patient.

Care closer to the people’s homes: Improving care

A greater adoption of AI technology should be accompanied by investments in primary care facilities in rural areas and internet connectivity in rural locations. This will make healthcare more affordable and accessible, and allow people to live a better life in their local communities.

AI could be pivotal in the future in addressing lifestyle-related illnesses such as obesity, which is a major concern for about 1 in 8  People at high risk for obesity could get personalized lifestyle tips through their smartphones. Data analysis could help inform public interventions that target specific geographic or age groups. This is how big data can have a big impact. The government has stated in its plans for a “Healthy India 2030” that the primary focus of the healthcare system will shift away from treating to preventive care.

Call for collaboration

How can we accelerate our journey to more efficient, accessible, and preventative care?

  • Building a stronger data ecosystem is a priority. Quality of AI depends on the quality of data it receives. India’s healthcare system will benefit from sharing data standards, better data exchange, and interoperability between systems. 
  • This would be protected by top-notch security precautions. This is a significant step forward in the direction of three digital national databases containing health information.
  • Data-driven AI approaches like AI can only be effective when they are complemented with medical expertise. AI is only one part of a solution. It is not the solution. It is essential to have a deep understanding of the clinical context. AI-assisted healthcare must be centered on the physician and patient.
  • Third, AI-enabled devices must be thoroughly tested against the most stringent regulatory standards. We must deploy new technologies carefully and wisely in healthcare, where lives are at risk. Only through proper clinical validation can responsible, safe, and effective use be made of AI. Both patients and physicians need to be educated about the strengths and limitations of each tool.
  • Fourth, collaboration is vital between established and startup companies, academia, and other businesses. India’s healthcare system is too complex for anyone to tackle alone. It is encouraging to see that the  government recently established a platform for collaboration in order to encourage the exchange of ideas, kick-start new projects in intelligent medicine .
